Period

18th century

This eighteenth-century French snuff box is fashioned from carved brown agate mounted with gold-toned metalwork, enamel, and diamonds. Designed with shaped, multi-faceted contours, the box features a hinged lid framed with a decorative border displaying colored enamel floral motifs interspersed with leaves.

Set centrally into the top of the lid is an oval portrait miniature in enamel on copper depicting Henrietta, Duchesse d'Orleans. The portrait shows the subject with curled brown hair, wearing a pearl necklace and a blue garment, bordered by a white enamel band and a surround set with small diamonds. The box measures 4.5 × 7 × 5.7 cm (1 3/4 × 2 3/4 × 2 1/4 in.) and was produced in Paris, France.
