Period

Qing dynasty (1644–1911), 1800–1850

This snuff bottle originates from China and dates to the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), specifically between 1800 and 1850. It is fashioned from shadow agate and measures 5.6 × 4.6 × 2.2 cm (2 3/16 × 1 13/16 × 7/8 in.). The compact vessel features a flattened, rounded body with curved shoulders that rise to a cylindrical neck. The opening is fitted with a stopper composed of a bright orange domed top set above a light green collar.

The decorative scheme is executed in carved relief upon the translucent, smoky brownish body of the stone. One side displays a carved horse standing beside a vertical panel shaped like a hanging banner that contains carved characters in relief. The natural tonal gradations of the shadow agate complement the carved composition across the polished surface.
