Period

c. 1735

This double snuff box, created around 1735 in Augsburg, Germany, is fashioned from polychrome enamel on copper and fitted with sculpted silver mounts. The container measures 6.7 × 7.3 × 5.2 cm (2 5/8 × 2 7/8 × 2 1/16 in.) and features an hourglass-like or waisted vertical profile with undulating, contoured edges at both the upper and lower rims.

The enameled exterior displays multi-colored pictorial compositions painted across a white ground. The curved sides are decorated with an expansive landscape scene depicting trees, rolling hills, bodies of water, and figures near a stone structure, beneath a pale sky with colorful clouds. The surface of the lid similarly depicts an open-air scene with figures set against rolling earth, water, and distant terrain. Metal mounts encase the top and bottom borders, accentuating the shaped contours of the box.
