Period

early 18th century

This early 18th-century snuffbox is an oval personal container crafted in Continental Europe. Made from silver-plated brass, the object measures 5.1 cm by 3.2 cm (2 by 1 1/4 inches).

The top of the lid is adorned with a relief depicting a scene of St. Michael triumphing over the devil. In the composition, the central winged, haloed figure holds a raised sword while standing atop a prostrate figure on the ground. A smaller accompanying figure stands beside the archangel, flanked by architectural elements and stylized clouds with emanating rays. A fine dotted border encircles the edge of the oval lid.
