This exceptional art book, titled "Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding: French Masterpieces 1880-1940" by Alastair Duncan and Georges de Bartha, is encased in a bespoke fine binding executed by Hugo Peller.
Published in New York in 1989, the 4to volume is sumptuously bound in tan goatskin. The intricate design features inlaid black goatskin leaf shapes on the covers, embellished with gilt spots and edged in delicate white goatskin lines. A central element consists of an onlaid feathered citron goatskin sun motif with curved gilt lines, radiating across the boards from a lower citron onlay featuring black patches and gilt spots.
The spine is titled in gilt and flows into the overall cover design. Internally, the book features black goatskin doublures decorated with gilt spots and curved lines, complemented by citron goatskin flyleaves. The top edge is striped in gilt and black. The binding is signed at the foot of the rear doublure. The volume is presented within a tan goatskin-backed cloth drop-back box, with the lid incorporating inlaid tan goatskin and gilt details.
