Period

This gold 5 Thaler coin, also known as a 'Pistole', is a representative piece from the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, minted in 1763 under the reign of Duke Charles I (1735–1780).

Struck in 900/1000 fine gold, the coin features on its obverse a profile portrait of the Duke facing right, wearing armour with a sash and a draped mantle. Surrounding the portrait is the Latin inscription 'CAROLVS · D · G · DVX · BR · ET · LVN ·' with the mintmaster's mark 'E' below. The reverse displays the heraldic Saxon steed leaping to the left, accompanied by the motto 'NVNQVAM RETRORSVM' ('Never backwards') and the date 1763.

The exergue contains the denomination '5 THALER' and the initials 'I.D.B.', which identify the mintmaster Johann Diederich Bode, active at the Clausthal mint between 1759 and 1769. The coin measures 22 mm in diameter and weighs 6 grams. It serves as a significant numismatic example of the coinage of the House of Welf, reflecting the economic and cultural patronage of Duke Charles I during his tenure.
