Federal Republic of Germany (1949-1990)Deutsche Bundespost postage stamps comprise the postal releases produced for West Germany by its national post and telecommunications organisation. Established in 1947 within the Trizone as the successor to the Deutsche Reichspost, the enterprise was initially titled the Deutsche Post until 1950. As a state-owned operation in the Federal Republic of Germany, it was responsible for postal services alongside the separate Deutsche Bundespost Berlin administration operating under Western Allied authority in West Berlin.
The period of use for Deutsche Bundespost stamps lasted from 1949 through to 1995. On 1 July 1989, under the first postal reform, the organisation was divided into three public divisions, with postal services placed under Deutsche Bundespost Postdienst. On 1 January 1995, a second reform privatised this branch into the publicly traded Deutsche Post AG, dissolving the original state operation. The Federal Ministry of Post and Telecommunications oversaw postal affairs until its dissolution on 1 January 1998, after which the function of issuing postage stamps was transferred to the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The stamp issues produced during this era encompass general postal releases as well as long-running definitive series. Motifs across these stamps prominently depict architecture, historical figures, and extended thematic subjects. Each definitive series is distinguished by its common theme and specific inscription, setting these issues apart from contemporaneous German releases such as those of the Deutsche Bundespost Berlin and the Deutsche Post of the GDR.
