Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
1906AD
This Chinese snuff bottle is of a compressed form and constructed from glass. It is a notable example of the Beijing School of inside-painted snuff bottles, created by the artist Zhu Zhanyuan.
The bottle features intricate, delicate miniature paintings applied to the interior surface. One side depicts a shanshui landscape incorporating a small figure on a sampan, while the reverse displays a scene of a cat on rockwork looking up at a butterfly. The work is dated to the Bing Wu year, corresponding to 1906 AD, and includes the artist's signature along with a seal. The bottle is fitted with a green stopper. Measuring 7cm in height (excluding the stopper), this piece is one of approximately eleven recorded bottles attributed to Zhu Zhanyuan, an artist who was known for emulating the style and subject matter of Zhou Leyuan during his career, which spanned from 1896 to 1906.
