Period

2nd half of the 18th century

This gentleman's verge pocket watch, crafted by Daniel de St Leu in London during the second half of the 18th century, was designed specifically for the Ottoman market.

It features a pair-cased construction in brass, with the outer case decorated in tortoiseshell and gold-coloured piqué pin inlays. The inner case is intricately engraved with foliage, scrollwork, and rosettes, and includes sound apertures and an internal bell for the quarter-repeater mechanism. The white enamel dial displays Ottoman-script Arabic numerals and is inscribed with 'LONDON'. It is powered by a gold-coloured full-plate verge movement featuring a chain and fusee drive, with a pierced and engraved balance cock.

The watch includes a gold-coloured chain with two winding keys. The dial shows a repair between 2 and 3 o'clock. The dust cover and movement plate are both signed 'Dan. De St Leu', 'Watch Maker to her Majesty', and marked with the number 3828.
