Period

1835

This silver Pattern mule Rupee, struck in 1835 in Calcutta, is an important specimen of the Uniform Coinage of India issued by the East India Company. It features a portrait of King William IV on the obverse, shown in profile facing right, with the legend "William Iiii, King" in small, widely-spaced lettering.

The truncation of the bust bears the initials "r.s." for Robert Saunders. The reverse mirrors the standard currency coinage of the era, displaying the denomination "One Rupee" and "Yek Rupiya" in Persian script, enclosed within a laurel wreath that includes an extra berry at the top left. The text "East India Company" encircles the wreath, with the date "1835" positioned below. The coin has a grained edge and weighs 11.70 grams, with a diameter of 30 mm.

This specific piece is classified as a mule, as it combines an experimental obverse die with a standard currency reverse. It is noted for its high quality and historical significance within the numismatic series of British India.
