Period
1830
This Dutch Empire-period tobacco box, crafted in 1830 by silversmith Antonie Keun in Groningen, is constructed from 833/1000 silver. The box features fine, ribbed decorations covering its exterior.
It is a rectangular, hinged-lid container measuring 2.8 x 14.5 x 8.5 cm and weighing 227 grams. The interior of the hinged lid bears a later-added engraved inscription reading, "Gerbrand Arkema Overleden 21 Febr. 1879." Accompanying the piece is a detached silver plaque that originally adorned the interior, which features an alliance coat of arms depicting a greyhound on one side and a diagonally rising northern pike beneath a baron's crown on the other.
It is uncertain whether this plaque was an original component of the box or a later addition. The box is stamped with several Dutch hallmarks, including the lion 2, a Minerva mark, the date letter V for 1830, and the maker's mark consisting of the initials AK under a star.
