English Tokens - 17th Century - Southwark - I / A E in MADE LANE - Unrecorded Lead Farthing Token
Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
17th century A.D.
Obv: fouled anchor with IN MADE LANE legend. Rev: I flanked by stars over A E with pellet between and below. 1.97 grams. Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK.
Williams/Dickinson do not record any token for Made Lane (believed to be Southwark); the size and format closely resemble the normal copper-alloy token farthings of the 17th century but this is clearly struck in lead. There is an ancient public house named The Anchor in Bankside, Southwark and this token could be linked to that establishment; a most interesting piece. [No Reserve]
