India republican postage stamps are the postal issues produced by independent India, beginning with the first releases of 1947. These stamps superseded the postal issues of the British administration to serve the countrywide communications network maintained by the Indian postal service.

The earliest independent issues formed a defined short set that marked the formal transition away from British India. Moving away from colonial iconography, these inaugural designs highlighted motifs representing the sovereign nation, including the national flag, the national emblem, and historical subjects. Serving postal needs across the country, these issues functioned within a public service system that operated alongside new national postal markings introduced in the immediate aftermath of independence.

Historical context

Following the independence of India in 1947, the countrywide postal system continued to function and deliver low-cost services across the nation, while partitioned territories such as Pakistan established separate postal administrations. To commemorate the transition from British rule, independent India issued a defined short set of postage stamps in 1947. Concurrently, new national markings were introduced, beginning with the "Jai Hind" commemorative cancellation postmark on 15 August 1947, reflecting the newly adopted national slogan of the independent state.

Recognition pointers (from background sources)
Look for the absence of a royal portrait, which distinguishes republican issues from earlier British India stamps. Examine the designs for early independent motifs, specifically the national emblem, the national flag, and historical subjects. Check for contemporary cancellations from the era, such as the bilingual "Jai Hind" postmark featuring English and Hindi lettering.
