The air race, organized by Britain's Royal Aero Club, took place in 1934 as part of the Melbourne centennial celebration. Sir Macpherson Robertson (1859-1945), the Australian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and founder of the MacRobertsons' confectionery company. The basic rules for the MacRobertson Trophy were fairly clear-cut: no size limits, no power limits, no crew limits, and no new pilots once the planes left England" ( The Art Deco Poster, Crouse, p. 187).
