This pocket watch belonged to Lt. George Dixon, the commanding officer of the American Civil War-era Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley. The timepiece was retrieved from the wreck of the submarine, which sank on February 17, 1864. Archeologists examined the watch hoping to establish the exact time of the vessel's sinking.

Historical context
George Erasmus Dixon was a first lieutenant in the Confederate Army who commanded the submarine H. L. Hunley during the American Civil War. On 17 February 1864, the vessel attacked and sank the Union blockading ship USS Housatonic off Charleston, South Carolina. The submarine did not survive the attack and sank along with Dixon and all eight members of the crew.
