This object is a silver open-face pocket watch accompanied by a chain and key, dating to 1872. A long link chain with a hook release is attached to the bow, and a brass key is fastened to the top link of the chain. The case bears the hallmark "Birmingham 1872" along with serial number 40025.
The piece is part of the History collection at the Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, gifted by Dr/Mr A. W. B. Powell in 1967.

Historical context
This silver open-face pocket watch was hallmarked in Birmingham in 1872. It later formed part of the collection of Arthur William Baden Powell (1901–1987), an influential New Zealand naturalist, palaeontologist, and malacologist known to friends and family as Baden. Powell presented the timepiece to the Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira in 1967.
