Historical context
The Auckland War Memorial Museum, also known as Auckland Museum (Māori: Tāmaki Paenga Hira), began its collections and exhibits in 1852 in New Zealand. After the establishment of the Auckland Philosophical Society in 1867, soon renamed the Auckland Institute, the museum was transferred to the organization and operated as the Auckland Institute and Museum until 1996. The museum's collections concentrate on military history, natural history, and New Zealand history, particularly that of the Auckland Region. This pocket watch was donated to the museum's History collection in 1967 by Miss M Thomson.
