This metal pocket watch by Waltham was given as a gift to the Commanding Officer of the USS Dallas (DD-199) in 1933. The destroyer was commissioned in 1920, decommissioned in 1945, and earned four battle stars in World War II.

The watch is preserved in the collection of the Curator Branch of the Naval History and Heritage Command.

Historical context

The Waltham Watch Company, also known as the American Waltham Watch Co. and the American Watch Co., produced roughly 40 million watches, clocks, speedometers, compasses, and other precision instruments in the United States between 1850 and 1957. Operating from facilities in Waltham, Massachusetts, the firm underwent several bankruptcies and restarts under new ownership across its history.

In 1933, this metal pocket watch was presented as a gift to the Commanding Officer of the USS Dallas (DD-199). The destroyer had been commissioned in 1920 and went on to earn four battle stars during World War II before its decommissioning in 1945.
