Record status

Individual type · partial

Period

18th century

Snuff box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in gold and painted in polychrome enamels with an imaginary portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots, based on a miniature by Bernard Lens, wrongly attributed to Isaac Oliver.

The queen is represented nearly half length, wearing a crimson veil and embroidered bodice and a collar of pearls; the portrait is enclosed in a framework imitating masonry. On the sides of the box are four groups of flowers in colours, in compartments reserved on a ground of diaper printed in gold. The bottom is covered with a similar gilt diaper. The box has a wavy front and sides, with a gilt metal mount.
