Period

18th century

Oblong snuff box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in red and black and painted in polychrome enamels, and gilded. On the lid is a sea-coast scene with a domed tower and shipping printed in red and painted over; it is enclosed by raised gilt scrollwork on a turquoise-blue ground.

On the sides, reserved on a ground of the same colour diapered with raised white dotted trellis, are four panels, containing bouquets or sprays of flowers painted in colours and enclosed by gilt scrolls. The bottom is decorated with raised white trellis-diaper on a white ground. Inside the lid is a print in black of a youth leaning against a tree, talking to a girl who is milking a cow, two other cows in the background; this is copied from a detail in an engraving by Luke Sullivan, published in 1759, of "A view of Woobourn in Surrey, the seat of Philip Southcote, Esq.".

With a gilt metal mount.
