Individual type · partial

Period

ca.1880-1890

The box shows many traditional motifs and metalworking techniques previously associated with Japanese sword fittings, but now continued on an object produced for export. Taking the form of two fans, it is made of the copper alloy known as sentoku (patinated copper, lead and zinc). The chiselled and relief design is of summer flowers, grasses and insects in silver, gold and other copper alloys. The smaller section of the box depicts a bat flying past a crescent moon and clouds.

Llidded box if copper alloy, gold and silver.
