Watch with Christ and the Samaritan Woman
Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
1753
The watch case consists of a separate inner case and an outer case. The bowl of the round, convex, hinged outer case is chased with a depiction of Christ and the Samaritan woman.
Christ sits by a water well, raising his left hand, extending his right, while the woman stands on the other side of the well, holding a chain in her right hand, and keeping her left on her heart. In the background a man and a woman walk in a rocky landscape with trees. The scene is surrounded by an asymmetrical border of C-scrolls and S-scrolls, rocailles, stylized palm leaves, and a column on a punched ground. On the left side is the spherical push-button with which the case can be opened.
The bowl has a profiled, protruding upper rim in which a semi-circular opening for the pendant is recessed. The bezel fits against this with an identical rim, decorated with an asymmetrical pattern of C- and S-scrolls, rocailles, and floral tendrils on a punched ground. The round, convex, plain inner case has a hinged bezel with slightly domed watch glass. The pendant with bow is attached at the top. The circular winding hole is located at the back.
