From 1959 onward, BCEAO coinage omitted earlier French colonial emblems in favor of regional iconography, featuring the title "Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest" and an indigenous tribal mask between the denomination numerals. Across successive series, the coinage has included base-metal pieces such as stainless steel 1-franc, cupro-nickel 50-franc, and nickel-steel 100-franc coins, alongside later bimetallic 200-, 250-, and 500-franc denominations.

Historical context
Following Senegal's independence around 1960, the nation retained the West African CFA franc under the collective issuing authority of the BCEAO, located in Dakar. The regional currency was pegged to the French franc before transitioning to a fixed peg with the euro in 1999. Although BCEAO banknotes carried letter codes such as "K" to identify distribution in Senegal, circulation coins were strictly communal and never displayed country names, letters, or individual national identifiers.
