Period
1867-1939
He was envoy to Belgium, France, Italy, Russia, Austria, the Netherlands, and Germany for the Qing imperial court and led reforms in modernizing China's railways and public works. He was executed during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The same bottle was illustrated in Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, 'A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection', vol. 4, Hong Kong, 2000, no. 609.
The inscription on the reverse can be translated as: 'Brother Zhujun, enjoy your time On this day, the sky is clear, the air is fresh, and the wind is gentle. Looking up, I can see the vastness of the universe, and looking down, I can see the abundance of species. So I can enjoy the view and indulge my thoughts, which is enough to satisfy my visual and auditory enjoyment. Ma Shaoxuan'
