This 1000 Francs note was issued in Switzerland by the Swiss National Bank, with dates recorded from 1996–2012. It belongs to the Franc (1850-date) currency system. Issuing authority and period recorded in the catalogue: Federal State (1848-date). It measures 181 × 74 mm and is printed on paper (cotton lint). The Standard Catalog of World Paper Money lists the type as Pick 74.

Obverse: Portrait of Jacob Burckhardt. A photographic image in the upper left corner shows him on his way across the Münsterplatz to the University of Basel. Its lettering reads “1000 / Jacob Burckhardt 1818-1897 / 1000 / Banknoten sind strafrechtlich / geschützt. / Las bancnotas èn protegias / dal dregt penal. / Tausend Franken / Milli Francs / SCHWEIZERISCHE NATIONALBANK / BANCA NAZIUNALA SVIZRA”. Reverse: The main motif is a window of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. The windows of this building are considered to be the most beautiful of the Renaissance, the epoch that holds a prominent position in Burckhardt's work. The text passage in the background comes from the "Weltgeschichtliche Betrachtungen". Above is a section of the Pergamon Altar (today in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin). For Burckhardt, this altar is the central expression of Greek art and culture. The detail from the frieze shows the fight of the giants against the Olympic gods. In the background, the dome of the Pantheon in Rome is visible, of which Burckhardt had a picture in his study. At the bottom left is a graphic representing Jacob Burckhardt's understanding of history. Burckhardt breaks down historical epochs by means of art changes in architecture, sculpture and painting and at the same time sets them in relation to state, religion and culture. Its lettering reads “1000 / Le président / du Conseil / Un membre de la / Direction générale / 1000 / Les billets de banques sont protégés / par le droit pénal. / Le banconote sono protette / dal diritto penale. / Mille Francs / Mille Franchi / Staat / Religion / Kultur / Revolutionszeitalter / Renaissance / Mittelalter / Antike / Skulptur / Architektur / Malerei / BANQUE NATIONALE SUISSE / BANCA NAZIONALE SVIZZERA / ”.
