Basel Dove, 1845

The Basel Dove, known locally in German as the Basler Taube or Basler Dybli, is a cantonal postage stamp released by the Swiss canton of Basel on 1 July 1845. Bearing a denomination of two and a half rappen, it represents the only postage stamp ever issued by the canton. At the time of its release, uniform postal rates did not exist across Switzerland, as each individual canton was responsible for managing its own postal administration prior to the establishment of a countrywide service on 1 January 1849. Basel was one of only three cantons to produce its own postage stamps, alongside Zürich and Geneva.

Designed by the architect Melchior Berri, the stamp was produced as an imperforate issue and holds an important place in philatelic history as the first tricolour postage stamp in the world. The issue remained valid for postal use for more than nine years until 30 September 1854. By the time it was withdrawn from service, a total of 41,480 stamps had been printed. The visual design is distinguished by its central motif of a white dove carrying a letter in its beak, executed in raised embossed relief. The stamp was printed in three colours: black, crimson, and blue. The composition incorporates the German inscription "STADT POST BASEL", denoting the Basel city post office. Due to the historical presence of forgeries and facsimiles of this issue, specimens require careful assessment by a specialist.
