Period

Circa 1695 and later

This antique English clock watch, numbered 83, features a gilt full plate fusee verge movement by the renowned maker Thomas Tompion. The movement is distinguished by its pierced and engraved balance cock, silver regulation, count wheel, and tulip pillars, and it incorporates a hammer striking mechanism on a bell.

The timepiece is housed in a later gilt inner case featuring intricate pierced and engraved floral decoration, accompanied by a later gilt and leather outer case. The bell is secured to the inner back by a single screw. The later white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals and an outer arcaded minutes track, complemented by gilt beetle and poker hands. Measuring 57mm, the watch is accompanied by its winding key. While the movement dates to circa 1695, both the casing and the enamel dial are documented as later additions, consistent with its recorded history in horological literature.

This piece represents the technical craftsmanship associated with the workshops of Thomas Tompion, who was instrumental in the advancement of English clock and watchmaking during the late 17th century.
