Tobacco box, enamel on copper, England, 18th century
Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
18th century
Tobacco box, enamel on copper, transfer-printed in black. Oblong, with rounded ends and a gilt metal mount. On the lid is a haymaking scene. A man and woman carrying bundles, with a boy carrying a basket, a girl holding a rake, and a dog are walking along a path in the foreground; to the right, a man and woman resting in the shade of a tree; in the distance, a church beyond a field with haycocks and a wain.
Round the sides are prints placed so as to form a continuous landscape, in which are seen, amongst other figures, two sportsmen with a dog, a man on a horse conversing with a woman, figures crossing a wooden footbridge (adapted from the engraving by William Woollett of a view at Painshill), a woman showing the way to a man who is watering his horse in a lake, and a gentleman with two ladies angling; the last-named figures are adapted from a detail of a print, also by Woollett, after a drawing by himself, of "A view of the Canal and of the Gothic Tower in the Garden of His Grace the Duke of Argyle, at Whitton, in Middlesex".
