Period

1874

This pair of 25-cent fractional currency notes belongs to the fifth series of United States fractional paper money, issued in 1874. Each banknote features an engraved portrait of Robert J.

Walker, the former Secretary of the Treasury, situated on the left side of the obverse. To the right of the portrait, the denomination '25 CENTS' is printed prominently over a red Treasury seal, framed by elaborate scrollwork. The notes are inscribed with 'UNITED STATES' and 'TWENTY FIVE' at the top, and 'FRACTIONAL CURRENCY' at the bottom. The reverse side highlights the denomination in a green decorative medallion at the center, surrounded by intricate guilloche patterns and fine engraving, including the imprint of the Columbian Bank Note Co., Washington D.C.

The overall design utilizes green ink with symmetrical floral and geometric borders, incorporating anti-counterfeiting measures standard for the era. Measuring 90mm by 52mm, these notes demonstrate signs of circulation, including creasing and edge wear, with one note exhibiting a vertical tear.
