Period

18th century

This object is an English sewing thimble produced during the eighteenth century by an unknown maker. It measures 1.9 cm in height and is fabricated from enamel applied over a copper base. The lower edge of the thimble is fitted with a protective gilt metal rim, while the domed top has an indented surface designed to hold needles firmly during hand sewing.

The exterior body of the thimble is decorated using polychrome enamel painting. The surface ornamentation consists of sprays of multi-coloured flowers situated within reserved panels. These panels are defined and enclosed by raised white scrolls set against an apple-green ground. The museum record documents no inscriptions or maker's marks on the piece.
