Period
1730-1755
This lidded tobacco jar and cover is a cylindrical container made of soft-paste porcelain, decorated with sprigged and applied motifs picked out in enamel colours. The exterior features raised floral decoration displaying blossoms and foliage rendered in red, purple, blue, and green enamels over a white body. The matching cover is fitted with a sculpted floral finial and decorated with painted floral sprigs.
The piece was originally manufactured in France between 1730 and 1755, attributed probably to the Saint-Cloud porcelain factory. It was later enamelled and marked during the 19th century. The jar carries a mark painted in green enamel featuring the letters 'St.C' over 'T'.
