This object is a screenprinted political poster on paper, executed in ink. Designed and produced by The Poster Collective (also known as the Tolmers Poster Cooperative or Poster Collective, Tolmers Square) in the United Kingdom around 1977, the work forms a double-sided print bearing the accession number E.128-2004.

The featured verso side, titled "Zimbabwe. One Enemy: Imperialism", displays prominent headline text reading "ZIMBABWE" across the top and "ONE ENEMY: IMPERIALISM" along the lower edge. The central composition consists of a montage of photographic reproductions accompanied by typewritten textual blocks that quote Cecil Rhodes, the Matabele King Lobengula, and Lenin. The reverse (recto) carries a trial proof of another propaganda poster titled "Solidarity with Grunwick Strikers", which depicts British labour strikes.

Historical context

In Southern Rhodesia, the white minority government of Ian Smith maintained power despite international condemnation, prompting the Zimbabwe African People's Union and the Zimbabwe African National Union to unite as the 'Patriotic Front' and fight a guerrilla war. The poster advocates overthrowing the white regime by confronting the underlying ideology of imperialism rather than targeting specific individuals. The reverse features a trial proof printed by the Tolmers Poster Cooperative supporting striking British workers.
