Historical context

The poster was produced as part of an appeal launched in 1978 to save the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital from closure. The institution originated in 1872 when Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836–1917), a pioneering female doctor who overcame gender barriers in the medical profession, established the New Hospital for Women in London staffed entirely by women. Renamed in her honour following her death in 1917, the hospital faced closure until Margaret Thatcher pledged to preserve it if elected to office, later fulfilling the promise, while the hospital raised £500,000 for renovated equipment and furniture.
