Historical context

The anthem "Internationale" was written in Paris in June 1871 by Eugène Pottier (1816–1887), a member of the Central Committee of the Paris Commune. The Commune was formed by Parisians opposing the National Assembly and the Thiers government following the Franco-Prussian War before being crushed by Versailles troops and Prussian forces. Pottier's anthem and the Commune's reforms became enduring symbols of radical thought and action. This poster connects the Paris Commune to subsequent labour, socialist, and communist uprisings.
