Historical context

Maundy money consists of specially minted coins traditionally presented to the poor by the ruling British sovereign during the Maundy Thursday ceremony. Specially minted sets began under Charles II in 1662. This coin later formed part of an ensemble associated with a pair of historical dolls known as 'Lord and Lady' of the Cockerell family home in Clapham, London, descendants of Samuel Pepys.
