Following his work at Audemars Piguet and, most significantly, his instrumental role in the revival of Breguet during the 1970s and 1980s, Daniel Roth established his eponymous brand in 1988, becoming one of the pioneers of the modern independent watchmaking movement. His early creations quickly established the distinctive design language that would define the Maison, combining the characteristic double-ellipse case with hand-guilloché dials and highly refined complications. Following the introduction of his celebrated tourbillon, Roth turned his attention to the chronograph, resulting in the Ref. 2147.

Introduced in 1990, the model is powered by the hand-wound Lemania 2320, the same ébauche used as the basis for the movement of the celebrated Patek Philippe Ref. 3970. The 2147 was produced in different precious metals and with either open or closed casebacks, while its dials were offered with either Clous de Paris or pinstripe guilloché. The present example is particularly noteworthy for its exceptionally low production number, placing it among the earliest chronographs ever produced. Cased in 18K yellow gold and featuring a closed caseback.
