The 10 Afghani banknote is a paper currency denomination of Afghanistan managed by Da Afghanistan Bank. While 10 afghani Treasury notes were first introduced between 1925 and 1928 and paper issues continued under the central bank from 1939, the modern denomination was established on 7 October 2002 as part of the second afghani currency reform under the ISO code AFN.

Printed during the era of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the modern notes were introduced to establish a single, secure paper currency. Production of the second afghani was contracted internationally, initially in Germany and later in Poland. The banknote series subsequently received updated security features during production revisions in 2004 and 2008.

Historical context

During the Afghan civil war, the national currency collapsed into extreme instability as competing factions, warlords, and counterfeiters produced unstandardized banknotes. In 2002, the government of Hamid Karzai initiated a comprehensive monetary reform to halt inflation and eliminate rival currencies. The second afghani replaced previous paper issues at established conversion rates, bringing banknote issuance back under the sole authority of Da Afghanistan Bank.
