Late 18th century

This circular button consists of a ceramic medallion mounted within a metal setting bordered by small faceted beads. The central medallion features a classical figurative motif executed in white relief against a light blue ground, depicting two standing figures positioned closely together in an embrace.

The button is made of stoneware (jasperware) and measures 0.5 cm in depth and 2.3 cm in diameter (3/16 by 7/8 inches). It was produced in Burslem, England, by the Wedgwood Manufactory, an enterprise founded in 1759. The object dates to the late 18th century and reflects the manufacture's production of decorative apparel accessories featuring relief-ornamented jasperware plaques.
