Period

Timurid dynasty (ca. 1370–1507), dated 1486 (891 AH)

This funerary object is an arched, rectangular tombstone tile made in Kashan, Iran, during the Timurid dynasty. Dated to 1486 (891 AH), the piece is executed in fritware and lusterware, decorated by painting in luster and blue over an opaque white glaze. It measures 36.9 × 24.7 × 3.2 cm (14 1/2 × 9 11/16 × 1 1/4 in.).

The architectural composition features a recessed central niche framed beneath an arch and pointed finial, surrounded by raised borders. Elaborate calligraphic inscriptions in Arabic script fill both the primary panel, the arched crest, and the outer framing borders, rendered in golden-brown luster against the white glazed ground with blue outlines and decorative flourishes in the spandrels.
