Period

1880/1900, Qing dynasty (1644–1911)

This object is a Chinese textile court badge, also known as a rank badge, dating to between 1880 and 1900 during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Made in China by Manchu creators, the square badge measures 30.3 by 31.6 cm (11 7/8 by 12 3/8 in.). It is split down the vertical center into two halves, a configuration standard for front-facing badges worn on front-opening surcoats.

The badge features detailed decorative work primarily in metallic gold or yellow threads against a dark ground, classified under weaving and needlework techniques. The composition displays diagonal wavy water stripes at the base beneath rolling waves, above which swirling clouds fill the sky. A central creature rests among the clouds facing toward a prominent red disc representing the sun near the upper right. An ornate border framing the central imagery contains repeating scroll and foliage motifs.
