Period
c. 1750
This tall case clock dates to circa 1750, featuring an imported movement housed within an American-crafted case. The movement was made by Thomas Hughes, who was active in London between 1750 and 1783. The wooden case originated in Boston and is attributed to George Glinn (also recorded as Glenn), an Irish craftsman working in Boston during the mid-18th century.
The clock is constructed from mahogany and New England white pine. It stands on carved feet supporting a paneled base, an arched waist door flanked by quarter columns, and an arched hood. The bonnet is adorned with decorative finials at the corners and detailed moldings framing the glazed dial door. The metallic dial includes a chapter ring with Roman numerals along with auxiliary dials, surrounded by ornate corner spandrels.
The overall dimensions of the piece are 259.1 cm in height, 59.7 cm in width, and 29.2 cm in depth (102 × 23 1/2 × 11 1/2 inches).
