Period

19th–20th century

This wooden spoon is carved from a light-toned wood with natural grain variations. It features an oval, shallow bowl that connects to a decorative handle. Just above the junction between the bowl and handle, the wood widens into a notched, winged motif. The shaft of the handle is slender and bordered by serrated or notched edges, terminating in a rounded finial pierced with a circular hole.

The spoon was created in California by an unknown Yurok carver and dates to the 19th–20th century. Its overall dimensions are 18.5 × 5.8 × 5.8 cm (7 1/4 × 2 1/4 × 2 1/4 in.). The museum classifies the piece under sculpture and spoons, and records no inscriptions on the object.
