Period

1700s

This object is a silk book cover created in China during the 1700s. Produced using a lampas weave technique, the textile features a bright yellow ground decorated with woven motifs. In the upper-central area, two confronting dragons flank a flaming jewel and other auspicious symbols below a central medallion. Clouds in various shades of blue, green, and red surround the dragons.

A vertical rectangular border runs along the left edge, providing a framed space intended for a title strip. Small repeating motifs, including circular medallions and geometric emblems, are arranged across the borders and field. The textile measures 27.3 by 32.4 cm (10 3/4 by 12 3/4 in.).
