This Chinese rank badge (buzi), also known as a mandarin square, dates to the Qianlong reign (1736–95) of the Qing dynasty. It measures 27.3 by 26 cm and is constructed from dark silk in a satin weave decorated with embroidery in silk and metal thread. Divided vertically down the center, the panel was designed to be affixed to the front of a ceremonial coat featuring a central opening.

The embroidery presents a stylized depiction of the universe against a dark background. At the center, a mythical quadruped stands upon a rocky outcrop situated amid rolling waves and craggy peaks. The creature turns toward a red sun placed in the upper right quadrant, surrounded by swirling multi-colored clouds and pine branches. A narrow decorative border frames the entire square.

Historical context

Rank badges were employed in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties to identify an official's standing, with birds designating civil officials and beasts denoting military ranks. In the Qing dynasty, the central animal faced the sun—representing the emperor—to signify loyalty. Badges were produced in matching pairs for the front and back of robes, with the front badge split to accommodate the coat opening. This example was acquired in 1948 by the Cleveland Museum of Art from dealer Alice Boney.
