Historical context

Trajan Decius, who had been proclaimed emperor by his troops after putting down an uprising in Moesia, governed the Roman Empire from 249 until his death alongside his son at the Battle of Abritus in June 251. This coin was issued at Viminacium, a major city, military camp, and the provincial capital of Moesia Superior. At its peak, the city was situated along the Via Militaris and ranked among the largest urban centres in the Balkans.
