Historical context
Pantikapaion, known in Latin as Panticapaeum, was an ancient Greek city located on the eastern shore of Crimea, a region known to the Greeks as Taurica. Situated on the western side of the Cimmerian Bosporus on a hill later named Mount Mithridat, the settlement was founded by Milesians in the late 7th or early 6th century BC. Staters were ancient coins used across various regions of Greece and were minted in gold by the city during the Classical period.
