Obverse: Caps of the Dioskouroi surmounted by stars. Reverse: Thyrsos. Legend: ΔΙΟΣΚΟΥΡΙΑΔΟΣ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 3.67 g (mean of 303 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 15–18.4 mm (from 290 recorded specimens). Historical context

Dioskourias, also known as Dioscurias, was settled by Greeks in the 6th century BC in a wide bay on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. The city corresponds to modern Sukhumi in Abkhazia. During the Greek settlement and the subsequent Roman period, substantial portions of the ancient city disappeared under the Black Sea.
