1945
This commemorative medal, known as the 'Gerrit van der Veenpenning', was designed by the Dutch sculptor Hildo Krop in 1945. It was commissioned following a design competition held to mark the exhibition 'Kunst in Vrijheid' (Art in Freedom), which took place at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in September and October 1945.
The exhibition honored visual artists who resisted the German occupation during World War II by refusing to join the Kultuurkamer. The medal features a profile portrait of the resistance leader and sculptor Gerrit van der Veen. It was presented to the participants of the exhibition and to twenty-five American painters in recognition of their support for Dutch artists. The specific example shown was presented to the artist Betsy Westendorp-Osieck.
The medal is housed in its original cardboard box, which bears the manufacturer's name, 'Koninklijke Nederlandsche Edelmetaal Bedrijven'. The medal has a diameter of 6 centimeters and serves as a historical artifact commemorating the Dutch resistance movement and the liberation of the Netherlands.
