Compare the identifying evidence
- Purpose and inscriptions
- Record and compareRecord both legends, denomination if present, issuer and evidence of award, commemoration or accounting use.
- Limits of the evidenceAbsence of denomination does not rule out a coin; a suspension loop can be a later addition.
- Occasion and attribution
- Record and compareSeparate the commemorated event from manufacture; transcribe signature, initials and their location.
- Limits of the evidenceA portrait likeness is not an attribution. The event year is not necessarily the striking year.
- Relief and manufacture
- Record and compareDescribe relief, seams, sprue traces, tooling and the source's stated casting or striking method.
- Limits of the evidenceCasting can be original manufacture. Soft detail or pitting alone does not prove a later copy.
- Metal and edge
- Record and compareMeasure diameter and mass; record edge stamps, lettering and any documented alloy or finish.
- Limits of the evidencePatina and colour cannot establish alloy. A face photograph often conceals the marks needed to date a restrike.
- Issue and later versions
- Record and compareCompare size, inscriptions, edge marks and documented versions against a specifically cited specimen.
- Limits of the evidenceA model, cast, original striking and restrike are different objects; never transfer the museum's attribution silently.

Adriaan Roland Holst (Society for Medallic Art 1977, extra medal)
1977
Charlotte van Pallandt was essentially self-taught as a sculptor, and was largely formed abroad. In the Netherlands she had contact with Dupuis, Termote, Wenckebach, Andriessen, Carasso, and Wezelaar. It is perhaps due to the absence of traditional training that no sculptor experimented in such diverse ways with the traditional theme of the portrait as Van Pallandt, also called "La grande dame de la sculpture néerlandaise". That title of honor is well-deserved. She worked in wood, various types of stone, and from the 1950s onwards especially in wax and clay. These latter materials gave her the opportunity to continue working when the model had already left; that was when her concentration was greatest. Her friend, the poet A. Roland Holst, posed—or rather sat, as he constantly fell asleep—for a life-size portrait in 1963. Van Pallandt modelled four different versions, one of which was cast several times in bronze. For the Society she designed three medals, of which the least naturalistic was executed. The head of the aged prince of poets was given its open form and volume by arranging parallel strips of wax strips over small balls, structuring the main lines of the head. The openness makes the head unique: for despite the limited mass, there is clear recognizability and a suggestive effect and power. The reverse gives the name and dates of life in typography that is not by Van Pallandt's hand—she never applied herself to that. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, holds this object as NG-C-2017-89; its record gives material recorded as bronze (metal); technique casting; measurements diameter 9.3 cm x weight 370 g. Air and water (Vereniging voor Penningkunst 1934, first medal)
1934
Following Tjipke Visser in 1930, the board granted an open commission to the Rotterdam sculptor Bolle; a tradition that has continued to the present day. The obverse and reverse are entirely equivalent. Bolle went to work with the theme 'air and water'; a bird for air and fish for water. The air is accented by a small boat at the bottom of the field, the water by a small boat at the top of the field. The bird in particular—possibly Baudelaire's Albatross as a symbol of the flight of poetic imagination—is solved handsomely in spatial terms: the wings follow the circle and convey an impression of floating lightness, while the idea of space and distance is provided by a small boat in the background. The fish are even more naturalistic than the bird. A stylizing—and thus dating—element is the ripples on the water and the air bubbles. Fish are a popular subject in Art Nouveau, and a theme explored in the Netherlands by the painter Dijsselhof. They are symbols of silence and mystery and proof of the idea that arose in Romanticism that, alongside the human world, other, completely independent universes exist. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, holds this object as NG-C-2017-20-1; its record gives material recorded as bronze (metal); technique striking (metalworking); measurements diameter 6 cm x weight 91 g. Artis (Vereniging voor Penningkunst 1930, first medal)
1930
The annual report for 1929 notes that Tjipke Visser was asked if he would design an 'ornamental medal'. This term was used for the first time to distinguish it from the commemorative medal; 1930 was not an anniversary year for Artis. Visser, a pupil of Mendes da Costa and Allebé, had already been using animals as an independent medium for sculpture for years, and here drew inspiration from cranes. Because of their elegant lines, these splendid and agile birds were a very popular motif in Art Nouveau, which had in turn adopted it from the Japonism flourishing in the 19th century. In Japan, they are the symbol of eternally regenerating nature, as according to popular belief they live for a thousand years. The necks are too thick and too short, but the shape of the birds follows the circular form well. On the reverse it reads: 'Tueamur exempla naturae intactae'. Let us preserve the examples of untouched nature. A motto chosen by the director of Artis, Dr A.L.J. Sunier. It was still the time when one could assume that the members of the Society for the Art of the Medal knew their classical languages. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, holds this object as NG-C-2017-12-1; its record gives material recorded as bronze (metal); technique striking (metalworking); measurements diameter 6 cm x weight 89 g.
