Period

Electric wall clock, Synchronous Electric Clocks Ltd, Cricklewood, London, circa 1938. Synchronous Electric Clocks Ltd was an early trading name of Smiths Electric Clocks Ltd. Used at Newmarket Saleyards, Melbourne, until its closure in1987. Located in the Melbourne City Council office.

The Melbourne City Council office was where drovers would check off all their passes which stated the number of animals to be taken out of the saleyards. Drovers would hand in all of the stock agent passes in exchange for a Council pass. Numbers on the pass were required to tally with the number counted by the Melbourne City Council employee as the livestock passed through the gates at the Epsom Road underpass, the Main Lane, or any other delivery outlet. The numbers on the pass were used to calculate the yard dues and charges which had to be paid by the agents.

Metal wall clock with metal hands, marked with numbers 1-12 and 5 space increments between. Electric synchronous movement.
